NHSI Shafter Sites

Joy Cariño Kimpo Women's Health Center started operation on 7/22/98, in approximately 4,000 SF owned medical facility. In 1999, an additional 1,200 SF was added to include x-ray room and offices for providers and consultants. The demographic and economic indicators are as follows: A population of 21,133 as per KCED and U.S. Census 2000 (Tract 39-42 and parts of 38.03 and 38.09), 69% Hispanic and 11.9% speak little or no English and only 27% of the total population have an education of the 9th grade or higher. Only 66% of the labor force available are employed and the majority is work in agriculture or in related industries, (43% male and 23% female) leaving an average unemployment of 34%. In the 2005 calendar year, a total of 7,043 users received medical and social services, and 1,536 dental services. Farm workers were 3,337 and 5,242 others.

A new 13,500 SF facility, Shafter Community Health Center, opened in December 2002 and includes dental services.
